Objective of this qualification
The qualification is aimed at developing transferable skills for the creative industries including an understanding of the value of design, marketing and project management. Graduates will have an understanding of traditional and new supply chain methods of production, retailing and technical knowledge of production, as well as an up-to- date knowledge of multi-channel fashion and lifestyle business models and approaches. This is supported by creative management awareness so graduates will be well positioned to undertake management roles in the fashion industry, or to further their studies in higher level fashion management courses.

BTEC Level 4 Higher National Certificate in Fashion and Textiles (March 2012)

The BTEC Higher National Diploma in Fashion and Textiles provides opportunities for learners to apply their knowledge and practical skills in the workplace. Full-time learners have the opportunity to do this through formal work placements or their part-time employment experience. The qualification prepares learners for employment in the Fashion and Textiles sector and will be suitable for learners who have already decided that they wish to enter this area of work. Some adult learners may wish to make the commitment required by this qualification in order to enter a specialist area of employment in interactive media or progress into higher education. Other learners may want to extend the specialism that they followed on the BTEC Higher National Certificate programme. Progression from this qualification may well be into or within employment in the Fashion and Textiles sector.

The BTEC Higher National Diploma in Fashion and Textiles mainly offers a progression route for learners who are studying a Diploma in Foundation Studies (Art and Design), a National Diploma in Design or a National Diploma in Art and Design and equivalent to any foundation degree.

Learners studying on the BTEC Higher National Diploma will be able to either gain employment in the interactive media sector or continue their pathway studies at BA/BSc 1 year or MA at certain universities.

Entry Requirement Qualifications and/or experience held by applicants, considering whether this profile shows an ability to progress to a Level 5 qualification. For learners who have recently been in education, the entry profile is likely to include one of the following:

  • A BTEC National Certificate or Diploma in Design or Art and Design An AVCE/Advanced GNVQ in an appropriate vocational area
  • A GCE Advanced level profile which demonstrates strong performance in a relevant subject or an adequate performance in more than one GCE subject.
  • This profile is likely to be supported by GCSE grades at A* to C
  • Other related Level 3 qualificationsAn Access to Higher Education Certificate awarded by an approved further education institution from UK or International Institute. (i.e. Pakistan, Indian sub continent Intermediate or FA/FSc)
  • Related work experience.
  • Applicant may be considered without the above formal qualification who has related experience.

The 16-unit BTEC Higher National Diploma provides greater breadth and specialisation than the BTEC Higher National Certificate. Higher National Diplomas are mode free but are followed predominately by full-time learners. They allow progression into or within employment in the interactive media sector, either directly on achieving of the award or following further study to degree level.

  • Overseas qualification Higher School leaving certificate (intermediate)
  • Mature students over the age of 21 with no formal qualification but experience and another qualifications may be admitted at the digression of the admission tutor
International Students:

All international students are required to have a minimum of B1 or B2 level of English as per the CEFR. The new UKBA rules which have come into effect from 21st April 2011 for English Language requirements.

BTEC Higher National Diploma in Fashion and Textiles Level 5 (September 2012)

The HND/HNC courses in Fashion and Textile subjects are major workplace qualification which includes a broad range of highly relevant Fashion and Textile subject areas, making it ideal for those who have started, or are planning to move into fashion or creative industry. Fashion is the fourth largest industry in the UK, with a wealth of opportunities for those with high level training and specialist knowledge.

On the HNC/HND you will learn how to present and exhibit your work to industry standard and how to realise your fashion collection from idea to catwalk.

You can expect to learn new techniques in IT design, creative industry, graphics, photography, advertising and explore innovative processes and fashion trends and develop an independent mode of working as a fashion designer.

What does the course lead to?

This qualification has a strong emphasis on the vocational nature of fashion and textiles, providing you with the ability to present and exhibit your work. Gaining this qualification will enable you to work in the fashion and textile sector, a highly rewarding, exciting and diverse area in which to pursue a career. Potential roles could include fashion designer, contour design, textile design, tailoring, pattern cutting and grading. You could also establish your own fashion design company and use your acquired skills to design and manage a creative team. On completion of year 1 of the HND student may be awarded HNC (subject to credits obtained).

On completion of 2 years HND Students can use the pathway for a progression to final year for the degree BA/BSc or alternatively proceed to post graduate diploma Level 7.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment methods are varied and include written reports, presentations, critiques, portfolios and fashion shows.

The BTEC Higher National Diploma programme must contain a minimum of eight units designated at H2 level.

  • At level 4 the emphasis is on the application of knowledge, skills and understanding, use of conventions in the field of study, use of analytical skills and selection and organisation of information.
  • At level 5 the emphasis is on application and evaluation of contrasting ideas, principles, theories and practices, greater specialisation in the field of study, and an increasing independence in systematic enquiry and analysis.
  • This is a Foundation Degree level course.

Learners studying for BTEC Higher Nationals in Fashion and Textiles will be expected to develop the following skills during the programme of study:synthesis of a range of concepts, knowledge and skills relating to interactive media application of complex theories to practical realistic work situations in the Fashion and Textiles sector independence of approach to study and the generation of Fashion and Textiles evidence ability to engage with complex and/or unpredictable situations in Fashion and Textiles contexts ability to take responsibility to manage and direct their own and others activities insight and judgment in relation to the margins and consequences of error research and investigative skills-responsive to change and ability to multitask-ability to innovate and work in a creative way.

Students will gain practical training with our partner Digital Media Television Network on various aspects of Fashion and Textile shows productions, catwalks etc.
